The Kailasha or Kailashanatha temple
|
The Kailasha or Kailashanatha temple is the largest monolithic rock-cut temple in the world, located in the Ellora Caves, Maharashtra, India. A megalith carved out of one single rock, it is considered one of the most remarkable cave temples in India because of its size, architecture and sculptural treatment.
The Kailash temple at Ellora was made by the Rashtrakuta dynasty as a temple for Lord Shiva. Perhaps, it was meant to be a lookalike of Mount Kailash, the mystical abode of Shiva. |
